How much does a crown cost?
And no, we’re not talking about the Queen’s!
If you’ve sustained some damage to your tooth, or the enamel has worn away over time, you may need a crown installed.
How much do they cost? What is the procedure? What is a crown?
We’re answering all that and more below. Read on!
What Is A Crown
A crown, as the name implies, is a cap that is placed on top of a tooth that is damaged or decaying. There are different types and different materials and the crown you get installed will depend on your situation and budget.
Types of Crowns
There are 4 types of dental crowns. The different types include ceramic, gold alloys, base metal alloys, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Our dental team will have a look at your tooth and then determine what type of crown is best for you.
Porcelain crowns typically provide the best appearance, but are known to be fragile. If you bite down too hard on something, the crown could crack or break. For this reason, porcelain crowns are typically best-suited for front teeth.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are much stronger due to the metal base. They don’t chip as easily as porcelain crowns. Gold or base metal crowns are the strongest. They’re used to replace teeth that need to withstand heavy bite force like your molars.
How Much Does A Crown Cost?
You and your dentist have decided you need a crown. The only thing left to figure out is how much does a crown cost. The cost will vary depending upon the type of crown, as well as where you’re getting the work done. Different areas have different costs of dental work, and the size of the tooth being crowned will affect the cost as well.
All that being said, however, there are some approximate price ranges for getting a crown installed. If you opt for a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown you would be looking at spending anywhere between $875 and $1400. A gold or base metal alloy crown would run you somewhere between $830 and $2465 per crown.
A porcelain crown would be the most expensive, and would cost you somewhere between $800 and $3000. Again, these are just price ranges to give you an idea of what to expect. If you are looking to get more exact pricing, contact your dentist’s office.
Affordable Options
If you’re in need of a crown, and the price tags we mentioned seem too high, don’t fret. There are options.
If you live in an area that is near a college, see if they have a dental program. Many times you can get discounted dental work from students going through the program. Their work is supervised by licensed dentists which ensures that you are getting quality work.
If you don’t live close to a dental college you still have options. Reach out to your dentist to see if they offer a payment plan. Some dentists may even offer lower rates or “sliding scale” fees for people that need some help with payment.
